localhost:3001: what runs on it and how to open it
Port 3001 is where Next.js and many Node apps move when port 3000 is busy. How to open it and fix errors.
Open this address: http://localhost:3001This opens on your own computer. It only works if the program is running.
localhost:3001 is usually the second address. Next.js and other dev servers move to 3001 when port 3000 is already taken, and you can also choose it yourself. The terminal where you started the app shows the exact address.
What runs on localhost:3001
- Next.js, which tries the next free port when 3000 is busy
- Create React App, when you accept the offer to use another port
- Node / Express apps that call
app.listen(3001) - A second project running next to one on port 3000
Commands to start and test port 3001
npx next dev -p 3001PORT=3001 npm start$env:PORT=3001; npm startnpm run dev -- --port 3001Find what is using port 3001
Run these in a terminal on your computer. Nothing is sent to this site.
If localhost:3001 will not open
- Port 3001 is already in use
- Another program is on port 3001. Find it with the tool below and stop it, or start yours on another port.
- The page opens on 3000, not 3001
- Your app started on the first free port. Read the address printed in the terminal, and open that one.
- This site can’t be reached (ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED)
- The server is not running. Start it and keep that terminal open. See the full checklist.
- Works on your computer, not on your phone
- Start the server on all network addresses and use your computer’s IP address. See how to open localhost from your phone.

Questions about localhost:3001
- Why does my app use 3001 instead of 3000?
- Something else is already on port 3000, often an older copy of the same app. The new one takes the next free port.
- How do I stop it from moving to 3001?
- Find what uses port 3000 with the port checker, stop it, and start your app again.
- Is localhost:3001 safe?
- Yes, as long as it stays on localhost. Only your own computer can reach localhost:3001. It becomes reachable from other devices only if you start the program on 0.0.0.0 or your computer's IP address. Development servers are for testing, so do not put them on the public internet.
- Can I use a different port instead of 3001?
- Yes. Most programs let you choose the port with a setting or a command option. Pick a free port above 1024 and open that number instead, for example localhost:3002.
- How do I check what is using port 3001?
- Use the port checker on this page. It shows the command for Windows, macOS and Linux and does not send anything to this site.
- Can I open localhost:3001 from my phone?
- Yes, if both are on the same Wi-Fi. Start the program so it listens on all addresses, then open your computer's IP address with :3001 on the phone. A firewall on the computer can still block it.
