localhost/dashboard and your XAMPP htdocs folder
The XAMPP start page lives at localhost/dashboard. Your own sites go in the htdocs folder and open at localhost/foldername.
Open this address: http://localhost/dashboardThis opens on your own computer. It only works if the program is running.
localhost/dashboard is the XAMPP welcome page. Your own projects open at localhost followed by the folder name inside htdocs.
What runs on localhost/dashboard
- localhost/dashboard is the XAMPP welcome page
- Your sites open at localhost/yourfolder
- Windows folder: C:\xampp\htdocs. Mac/Linux: /opt/lampp/htdocs (XAMPP) or /Applications/MAMP/htdocs
How to open your own site in XAMPP
- Start Apache in the control panel.
- Create a folder in htdocs, for example htdocs/mysite, and put an index.php or index.html inside.
- Open http://localhost/mysite.
If localhost/dashboard will not open
- Object not found (404)
- The folder or file name in the URL does not match what is in htdocs. Names on Linux are case-sensitive.
- Dashboard redirects or looks different
- The XAMPP index file may have been deleted or replaced. Your own index.php in htdocs now shows instead.
- Nothing loads at all
- Apache is not running or uses another port, for example localhost:8080. See XAMPP Apache not starting.
