How to Change Your Wi-Fi Name and Password on a Router
Log in to your router and change the Wi-Fi name and password safely. Works for most brands, with notes for Airtel, Jio, TP-Link and Netgear.
You change the Wi-Fi password in the router’s wireless settings. The exact menu name differs, but the steps are similar for every brand.
Steps
- Log in to your router. Use the router IP finder if you do not know the address.
- Open Wireless, Wi-Fi or WLAN settings.
- Change the network name (SSID) and the password (pre-shared key).
- Choose WPA2 or WPA3 security, with at least 12 characters in the password.
- Save. Your devices disconnect, so reconnect them with the new password.
- If the router has two bands, change both or use one name for both.
Common problems
- The new password does not work on some devices
- Forget the old network on that device and join again.
- The option is missing
- ISP routers may hide it. Use your ISP’s app, for example the Airtel Thanks app or the Jio app.
- An old device cannot connect with WPA3
- Use WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode.
