Bridge Mode vs Access Point Mode: Use Your Own Router with an ISP Box
What bridge mode and access point mode mean, which one to choose when adding your own router, and how to avoid a double NAT.
If your ISP box is also a router, adding your own router can create two networks in a row (double NAT). That can break port forwarding, game chat and some apps. Bridge mode and access point mode are two ways to avoid it.
Steps
- Decide which device should be the router. Usually that is the one with the better Wi-Fi and features.
- To make your own router the main one, put the ISP box in bridge mode if it has that option, so it only passes the internet through. Your router then makes the connection. Some ISPs need to enable this for you.
- To keep the ISP box as the router, set your own router to access point mode (also called AP mode), and plug a LAN cable from the ISP box into its LAN port, not the WAN port. Turn off its DHCP server if there is a setting.
- Give your own router a free address in the ISP box’s range, so you can still log in to it.
- Check that devices get an address from just one router, and that internet works on all of them.
If it does not work
- I cannot reach the ISP box any more
- In bridge mode the ISP box may stop showing its page. Connect a computer to it directly by cable, or reset it if the ISP allows.
- Both routers use 192.168.1.1
- Change the address of the second router, for example to 192.168.2.1, or use access point mode. See own router behind an ISP router.
- There is no bridge mode option
- Many ISP routers hide it. Ask the ISP, or use access point mode on your own router.
Questions people ask about Bridge and access point mode
- What is double NAT?
- Two routers in a row each translate addresses. Traffic from outside then cannot find the right device without forwarding on both.
- Which is better, bridge or access point mode?
- Bridge mode moves routing to your router. Access point mode keeps routing on the ISP box and uses your router only for Wi-Fi.
