IPv6 Address Expander and Compressor: Full and Short Form
Expand a short IPv6 address to its full form or compress it to the shortest standard form. Shows the address type and reverse DNS name.
Paste IPv6 addresses, one per line, to see the full 32-digit form and the shortest standard form (RFC 5952). The tool also tells you what kind of address it is, such as link-local or global, and can give the reverse DNS name.
What it does
- Expands :: and removes leading zeros to the full eight groups.
- Compresses to the standard short form: lowercase, no leading zeros, the longest run of zero groups becomes ::.
- Understands addresses with an IPv4 ending (::ffff:192.168.1.1), square brackets and zone names (%eth0).
- Names the type: loopback, link-local, unique local, multicast, documentation, global and more.
- Gives clear errors for typos, such as two :: or a group with five digits.

- What does :: mean in an IPv6 address?
- It stands for one or more groups of zeros. It may appear only once in an address, so the tool can tell how many groups it replaces.
- Which form should I use in config files?
- Both work. The short form is easier to read. Use the full form when you need to compare addresses as text or write them into a reverse zone file.
- What is fe80:: ?
- A link-local address. It works only on the local network segment and is made automatically for every IPv6 interface.
- Are my addresses uploaded?
- No. Everything runs in your browser.
