What it does
- Counts words the way word processors do: hyphenated words and contractions count as one.
- Counts characters as people see them, so an emoji is one character.
- Gives sentence, paragraph and line counts. Sentence counting understands abbreviations, initials, decimals and web addresses.
- Estimates reading time at about 238 words a minute and speaking time at about 150.
- Lists the 10 most used words, and can skip very common words.
Frequently asked questions
- How does it count words?
- A word is a run of letters or digits. Hyphens and apostrophes inside a word stay inside it, so well-known and don't each count as one. For Chinese, Japanese and Thai, which have no spaces, the browser's own word detection is used.
- Why is my sentence count different from Word?
- Sentences end at . ! or ? followed by a space and a new sentence. The counter knows common abbreviations (Dr., Mr., e.g., i.e., vs., a.m.), initials such as J. R. R., decimals like 3.5, web addresses and numbered list items, so they do not add extra sentences. Word may count a few unusual cases differently, but the two should agree on normal writing.
- Does it count emoji correctly?
- Yes. A flag or a family emoji counts as one character, not several.
- Is my text uploaded?
- No. Everything is counted in your browser.
