What it does
- Shows a live preview as you type, using the CommonMark standard with tables, task lists and strikethrough.
- Raw HTML in your text is switched off by default. When you allow it, the preview is locked so scripts cannot run.
- Links that could run code (javascript:) are blocked.
- Copy the HTML, view the HTML code, or download a ready-to-open web page with its own styling.
- Tidy Markdown formats the text consistently (tables aligned, lists and spacing fixed).
- Add contents list builds a linked table of contents from your headings, and every heading gets an anchor id.
- Open a .md file from your device. Nothing is uploaded.
The preview follows the CommonMark standard with tables, task lists and strikethrough. Some sites add their own extras (footnotes, emoji codes, math, diagrams) that are not shown here, so their rendering can differ slightly.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my text uploaded?
- No. The Markdown is converted in your browser and never sent anywhere.
- Is it safe to paste Markdown from someone else?
- Yes. Raw HTML is off by default, dangerous links are blocked and the preview runs in a locked frame that cannot run scripts, even if you allow HTML.
- Which Markdown features work?
- Headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, lists, task lists (- [ ] and - [x]), tables, block quotes, code blocks, inline code, links, images, horizontal rules and automatic links. Footnotes, math and diagrams are not included.
- Why does a single line break not make a new line?
- Standard Markdown joins lines in a paragraph. End a line with two spaces or a backslash, or tick Single line break = new line, as GitHub comments do.
- What does Tidy Markdown do?
- It rewrites the text in a consistent style: aligned table columns, one blank line between blocks, and standard list markers. The meaning does not change.
- Can I use the HTML on my website?
- Yes. Copy HTML gives you the converted markup without the page styling, so your own CSS applies.
