Frequently asked questions
- Is it safe to type my real password?
- The page does not send it anywhere, but it is a good habit to test a similar password instead of your real one, in case of a browser extension that watches typing.
- How are the times worked out?
- The tool estimates the number of guesses from the length and the kinds of characters, lowers it for common patterns, then divides by a guess rate. Offline attacks on a leaked database can try about 10 billion guesses a second with fast hardware against weak hashes.
- Why does a long phrase score lower than I expected?
- A phrase made of real words is much easier to guess than random letters of the same length, so the tool counts each word as only about 13 bits.
- What makes a good password?
- A long, random one that is different on every site, kept in a password manager. For a password you must remember, use four or more unrelated random words.
